County Orienteering 2017

This year 6th Meath Ashbourne Scouts have the honour of hosting the county Orienteering event taking place on Sunday November 19th at Massey's Glen. Due to our leaders having to get on site early, transport equipment and other circumstances, parents are going to have to organise car pooling since there are very limited spaces available in leaders cars.

We will meet at the Community Centre at 9.20am on Sunday aiming to leave at 9.30am sharp. The event should be finished at around 3pm though this depends on the completion times of the slower teams. Our drop-off/collection point will be the Hellfire club car park. Directions here

Scouts should bring:

  • A Compass, if they have one.
  • A day bag with proper straps (no drawstring bags)
  • Wet gear including full wet legs
  • Hat and gloves
  • Hiking boots
  • Pen
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Camera or smart phone
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Packed lunch and a bottle of water
  • A bivvy bag (optional)

Queries to scout phone 086 0432355.

Scout hike in Howth

boots

This hike will go ahead on Sunday 11th March. We will be following the Bog of Frogs loop walk in a clockwise direction. This is an scenic 12k walk that is suitable for beginners.

Expect a text with RSVP. We expect to travel to Howth by car and so we'll be limited by the number of spaces available in cars. Those who have already confirmed they will be attending by Text will get first pick of spaces in leaders' cars. Anyone remaining who wants to go will need to get transport with a parent. We will meet briefly at the Community Centre at 9.45am and will leave before 10am. We will rendezvous in Howth at 10.30am. We will meet in the car park opposite Insomnia. Passing the Howth DART station, take a left down West Pier Road and turn right into the car park.

Hike equipment list is here. We plan to meet outside the Community Centre at 10am. There will be a €2 fee to cover transport expenses in leaders' cars and sundries.

Scouts should bring full rain gear and a flask with hot drink is recommended in addition to water. Scouts may bring some pocket money as there may be time to buy ice cream or chips afterwards. We expect to return to Howth by 2-2.30pm, then allow half an hour to buy chips or ice cream so hopefully all done by 3pm.

Hello all, it's almost time for our annual Summer Camp, are you ready? The program team for Cáirde 2017 have a great set of activities planned. Please take some time to ensure that you are packed and prepared. You can find a full gear list here. There will be an information evening for parents/guardians this Friday 21st July at 8.30pm in St. Marys. A responsible adult must attend for every scout going on camp. Please use the information evening as an opportunity to fill out and hand up your completed consent forms as well as managing medications forms if you haven't already done so.

As part of the camp programme (Messengers of Peace) we are working with a charity in the community who are giving assistance to refugees. These refugees are in real need of clothes and footwear, so please bring anything you can spare in bags and leave those with us at the Friday meeting.

We will depart Ashbourne Community Centre at 10.15am on Sunday July 23rd and will return at 3pm on Sunday 30th. This should be a wonderful experience for your Scouts. We look forward to seeing you on Friday!

Ventures please note: In addition to the above gear list you will need to bring sterling since a one pound sterling coin is required to operate the showers in Crom Castle.

Yours in Scouting,

The 6th Meath Ashbourne Scout & Venture Leadership Team

Lough Dan Backwoods Overnight

lough dan pano 684px

Lough Dan

Hello Scouts and friends, it's high time we got back to nature and started putting our backwoods skills into practise. On this weekend we hope to have fun but also cover a lot of ground in terms of putting our skills to use including:

  • Fires and fire making from scratch
  • Backwoods cooking
  • Shelter building / bivvying
  • Cord / rope making from natural materials
  • Whittling and carving
  • Identification of edible and non-edible plants

We aim to meet at the Community Centre at 9am on the morning of Sat. 15th. We will travel to Lough Dan Scout centre where we will do activities all day long. We will stay overnight and rise next morning, aiming to head home at around midday. We should be back in Ashbourne for 1pm. The cost of this event is 20 euro each which covers camping fees, consumables, transport and food.

The base equipment list is here but please note the following important changes.

To this list please add:

 - Head net and mosquito repellent, the midges can be bad at this time of year in Lough Dan

 - Working gloves

Please ignore the food instructions on the list, instead the scout should have:

 - Lunch

 - A light supper e.g. fruit and/or scone

 - Breakfast e.g. breakfast bar, instant porridge, flapjacks, fruit

 - Some high energy snacks e.g. dried fruit

Please check back here prior to Saturday as the gear list may have some late additions based on refinements to our programme.
